Mértola

Mértola, the Guadiana River port furthest from the coast, connected commercial routes between the Mediterranean and Alentejo, articulating a transitional territory between the Plain and the Algarve Mountain Range.

  • Mértola Monumental Complex

Discovered thanks to archaeology, the Mértola Monumental Complex is composed of testimonies of several of the town’s striking moments. The first is the period known as Late Antiquity (3rd to 8th century A.D.), encompassing Torre do Rio, Basilica do Rossio do Carmo and the Christian Religious Complex (Baptisteries I and II, Basilica, and Cryptoporticus). The other corresponds to the Islamic period (8th to 13th century), with evidence such as the Mosque, the Citadel Islamic Neighbourhood, the Riverside Outskirts, and the Castle.
