About

Fernão Vaz Necropolis

The Fernão Vaz Necropolis covers an area of 1,150 square meters and consists of two nuclei separated by a central strip, which may correspond to the old road leading to the Settlement of Fernão Vaz. Each nucleus has two types of funerary monuments with different architectural and chronological features. Initially, graves had circular plans, 5 to 6.9 meters wide. Later on, the plan became quadrangular or rectangular, and they were surrounded by steps.

This necropolis, where around 40 graves have already been identified, is related to the Settlement of Fernão Vaz; its inhabitants were buried here between the 8th and 4th century B.C. (Iron Age).
