About

House X

House X, built in the first half of the 13th century, revealed the need to make new residences inside the walls at that time, quite probably due to the pressure inflicted by the Christian armies when they settled in Beja. This house took advantage of a considerable part of a street perpendicular to the wall, which then acquired a winding shape and of one room of an adjacent house to the West, whose original door was boarded up.

Entrance to this residence is made through an atrium located to the North. This room communicated with the latrine, whose waters went directly into a septic tank in the street, and the central courtyard, paved with brick floor and featuring a central plot of land where fruit trees or aromatic plants could be grown. The kitchen is located to the South of the atrium and is divided into two functional spaces separated by a narrow bulkhead: the fire space to the West and the pantry to the East. On opposite sides of the central courtyard, East and West, there are two rooms with a mortar circulation level painted with iron oxide and niches in its Southern end.
