About

O Casarão

The archaeological site of Casarão is a funerary monument with a circular plan, approximately 6.9 meters wide. It consists of a rectangular central chamber and a corridor. Although only its base is preserved, it would have been covered by a hemispheric volume (burial mound), which made it stand out in the surrounding landscape.

This type of funerary monument, built in the late 8th century B.C. / early 7th century B.C. (Iron Age), was destined to individual burials, typically of important persons. However, besides the grave in the centre of the ensemble, a second grave – a pit covered with rocks – was identified outside the main funerary monument.
