mentionn\u00e9es pour la premi\u00e8re fois par Andr\u00e9 de Resende, au XVIe si\u00e8cle. Les premi\u00e8res fouilles arch\u00e9ologiques y r\u00e9alis\u00e9es eurent lieu au d\u00e9but du XIXe si\u00e8cle, \u00e0 la demande de Frei Manuel do Cen\u00e1culo, alors \u00e9v\u00eaque de Beja. D\u2019autres campagnes \u00e9taient d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es depuis, tel que celle sous la responsabilit\u00e9 de Cruz da Silva (1922-1948) ou et celles conduites par Fernando de Almeida (d\u00e9cennie de 1960). Dans la d\u00e9cennie de 1980, une \u00e9quipe luso-am\u00e9ricaine travailla dans ce lieu et, aux ann\u00e9es 1990, Filomena Barata coordonna un projet de valorisation de ce site.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">L\u2019arch\u00e9ologie a permis de confirmer que, pendant tout l\u2019\u00c2ge du Fer (VIe\/Ve si\u00e8cles a.C. \u00e0 IIe si\u00e8cle a.C.), un village indig\u00e8ne existait d\u00e9j\u00e0 dans lequel serait construite cette ville romaine. Pendant la dynastie des Flaviens, cet agglom\u00e9r\u00e9 urbain re\u00e7ut le statut de municipalit\u00e9 romaine. Lors de son apog\u00e9e (seconde moiti\u00e9 du Ier si\u00e8cle d.C. \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du IVe si\u00e8cle d.C.), il couvrait une superficie de 10 \u00e0 12 hectares.<\/p><p class=\"p1 translation-block\">Cet agglom\u00e9r\u00e9 urbain est organis\u00e9, de fa\u00e7on g\u00e9n\u00e9rique, en deux noyaux. Le premier, situ\u00e9 au nord, comprend l\u2019aire du forum (place publique), avec un temple centralis\u00e9 qui \u00e9tait d\u00e9di\u00e9 au culte imp\u00e9rial. \u00c0 ses c\u00f4t\u00e9s il y avait deux portiques et plusieurs \u00e9difices publics (basilique, curia, par exemple), deux complexes thermaux, une vaste aire r\u00e9sidentielle et plusieurs tabernae (magasins). Le second se trouvait \u00e0 environ 650 m au sud du forum forum, correspondant \u00e0 un grand \u00e9difice de spectacles \u2013 un cirque, ou un hippodrome \u2013 construit au IIe si\u00e8cle d.C., avec 359 m de longueur par 77,5 m de largeur. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019un des trois \u00e9difices de ce type d\u00e9couverts jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent dans le territoire actuel du Portugal, en plus de ceux de Olissipo (Lisboa) et Balsa (Luz de Tavira).<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Cette ville disparut graduellement depuis la fin du Ve si\u00e8cle d.C. jusqu\u2019au d\u00e9but du VIe si\u00e8cle
